The source of heat is the main body with which any heating element needs. The heating process might differ and it the forms might be radiant heat, fan-forced, or oil-filled but in all the cases the electric energy is transformed into a heat energy. Heating resistors work with a process known as resistive heating. In this process, the electric current is passed through a conductive material. This channel is known as the resistor which releases the heat. The capacity of heat produced is dependent on the heat resistance capacity of the resistor. The value is measured in “electrical resistance” while the measurement value of the inverse property is “electrical conductance.”

If the resistance capacity is too high then electricity might not pass through it and it will definitely mean that no heat is produced. To maximise the energy output thus it is required to get the right material. In most electric heating resistors the material that is mostly used is a metal wire. As per the appliance configuration, the coil binding changes. Either the coil is set tight by winding up or just used as flat strips. The length of the wire decides the heat that it can generate.
Especially used in space heaters, Nichrome is an alloy that has 4.1 ratio of nickel and chromium respectively. With a relatively high resistance, this is one of the popular choices. The alloy is also easy to give different shapes and becomes easy to work on different devices. The durability of Nichrome is high as it doesn’t oxidise even when it comes in contact of air. Many metals expand when comes in contact with heat but Nichrome does not expand in extreme temperatures as it comes with a melting point of 2550 degree Fahrenheit.
The Ceramic heaters
The operation being the same as other heaters, the difference is of the heating resistors where PTC ceramic plates are used instead of metals. The resistance of these plates increases upon heating and there is an optimum balance on the amount of heat produced. The ceramic plates capture heat quickly but the low surface temperature reduces the risk of fire. In space heaters mostly when the ceramic panels are used it is fit into a honeycomb configuration.
The other form of popular heater is Radiant or Infrared Heat Lamps. Radiant heat is something which is usually used in electric bulbs. For Infrared Heat Lamps there is a backup of the heating element which is called the reflector which generates heat only in a single direction.
